This year, the Ohio State Buckeyes have some returning talent as well as some new faces.
Meet freshman Isabelle Boulais. Isabelle first picked up her racket at the age of four and never put it down. Her role model is Rodger Federer, “the best player of all time,” said Boulais, and if she got to pick any doubles partner in the world it would be Elina Svitolina.
Although Isabelle didn’t play high school tennis, she played on the ITF Pro and Junior Circuits. Tennis has been a huge part of her life, however, when choosing to go to college she considered more than just the athletics programs.
“I chose to come to Ohio State because I felt this is truly a place I could grow as a person, as well as a tennis player. The energy both on the team and on campus is what makes this place so special, and I really wanted to be a part of this amazing place,” Boulais said.
Isabelle has accomplished a lot in her young career. During juniors, she participated on the Canadian Junior Fed Cup team and won the U16 Canadian National Champs in 2016 and was on the pro circuit, where she won the doubles of a $15k in Sri Lanka.
Isabelle loves the game of tennis for, “the amount of competitiveness and hard work that goes into it, but also the amount of respect that we have for each other and the game.”
In transition from her time in junior tennis to collegiate tennis, Boulais noticed a few things were different.
“Playing on a team is really a big adjustment for me. In juniors we were all by ourselves out there. Playing in college tennis really makes you readjust your mindset since my wins and losses don’t just affect me anymore, they affect my team as well.”
In order to keep up with the changes and stay on top of her game, Isabelle is constantly working toward continuous improvement.
“Currently, I’m working on the mental aspect of the game and my style of play,” Boulais said.
Not all aspects of her game need too much improvement though, Boulais strengths are found in her serve and forehand.
Isabelle is adjusting to the Buckeye lifestyle and doing so with the help of her teammates. Catch Isabelle in action this coming spring and welcome her to Buckeye Nation!
