PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Junior transfer Will Voetsch, making his Ohio State debut on Friday, opened the 2017 Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach Golf Links with a stellar round of 3-under 69. He was the low-Buckeye in their season-opening round and is tied for eighth.
Voetsch made a total of five birdies on the day including four in his first seven holes. The 3-under 69 was one shot off the lowest round of his career which he posted as a freshman in 2015-16 as a member of the team at Rice.
Fellow junior Will Grimmer made three-straight birdies on holes 2-3-4 and would make one more on the long par-3 12th to finish with a round of 1-under 71. That was his third-straight under-par round at Pebble Beach coupled his final two rounds last year.
Caleb Ramirez made 14 pars and a couple of birdies in his opening round of 73 and stands in a tie for 20th. Daniel Wetterich is a shot behind him as he closed with a birdie at the par-5 18th to finish with a 74.
Sophomore Caden Orewiler played the four par-5s in 5-under par including a pair of eagles en route to a 78. Jeg Coughlin III rounded out the Buckeye six with an 81.
In the play six, count five format, the Buckeye opened with a 365 (+5) and is in eighth place.
