No. 2 Ohio State Posts 5-2 Win Over Virginia

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team topped Virginia, 5-2, Wednesday night in the Varsity Tennis Center. The Buckeyes improve to 14-1, while the Cavaliers fall to 5-4.
The Buckeyes gained the 1-0 advantage going into singles after clinching the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Francesca Di Lorenzo, Miho Kowase, Sandy Niehaus and Ferny Angeles Paz all posted straight set wins in singles.
The Buckeyes will travel to Orlando, Fla., Tuesday to take on No. 1 Florida at 6:30 p.m. The match, held at the USTA National Campus as part of the USTA College Match Day series, will be available through WatchESPN online and for mobile devices.
“It’s always good to be back home and playing an evening match in our building,” Melissa Schaub, Ohio State head coach, said. “We are coming off of a tough weekend out in Arizona and we knew this was going to be a battle with Virginia. We have a lot of fight on our team and that showed tonight.”
In doubles, the senior pair of Kowase and Angeles Paz downed Hunter Bleser and Camille Favero, 6-0, on court three for the first Buckeye doubles victory. On court one, Virginia answered when the No. 43-ranked tandem of Cassie Mercer and Chloe Gullickson topped the No. 31-ranked Ohio State senior pair of Niehaus and Gabriella De Santis, 6-2. The No. 63-ranked tandem of sophomore Di Lorenzo and junior Anna Sanford defeated Rosie Johanson and Meghan Kelley on court two, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point.
No. 1 Di Lorenzo downed No. 75 Mercer 6-1, 6-3 on court one for the first singles win. After being down 4-1 in the first set to Teodora Radosavljevic on court five, No. 54 Niehaus came back to win the set 6-4 and claimed the second, 6-3, to put the Buckeyes ahead 3-0. Angeles Paz battled back from being down 3-1 in the first set to top Favero, 6-3, 6-3, on court six to secure the Ohio State team victory over the Cavaliers. Angeles Paz is on a 12-match winning streak, while Di Lorenzo and Niehaus each have won six matches in a row.
No. 53 Kowase notched the fourth singles victory for the Scarlet and Gray after beating Gullickson on court four, 6-3, 6-4, extending her winning streak to 13. Virginia went on the board for the first time when No. 61 Sanford fell to No. 94 Johanson on court two, 7-6, 6-3. After dropping a first set tiebreaker, 8-6, on court two to Kelley, No. 41 De Santis came back to win the second set, 6-4, but dropped the third set tiebreaker, 10-8.
