COLUMBUS, Ohio – Gabriella De Santis, a senior on the No. 7-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team, has been named the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
De Santis, from Caracas, Venezuela, played a key role in the No. 7 Buckeyes’ road win at No. 9 Vanderbilt Sunday, which ended the Commodores’ 37-match home winning streak.
De Santis posted a straight-set upset win over 28th-ranked Christian Rosca on court three in the victory. Her win tied the match at two, en route to the Buckeyes’ 5-2 victory, as Ohio State rallied after dropping the doubles point and the first singles match off court. De Santis rolled in the first set 6-1 before claiming the match in a second set tiebreaker. The Buckeyes won the next two matches in three sets to clinch the team victory and move to 5-0 this season. This is the fourth career Big Ten Athlete of the Week award for De Santis.
De Santis and the Buckeyes head to New Haven, Conn., this week for National Team Indoor Championships. The 16-team tournament starts Friday.
