No. 7 Ohio State Posts 5-2 Win at No. 9 Vanderbilt

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a matchup of two Top 10 teams, No. 7 Ohio State posted a 5-2 win at No. 9 Vanderbilt Sunday in Nashville. The Buckeyes are now 5-0 on the year, while the Commodores fall to 3-1.
Against the Commodores, Ohio State dropped the doubles and was down 1-0 going into singles. The Buckeyes got on the board when sophomore Francesca Di Lorenzo won on court one in straight sets in a matchup of the Top 2 ranked singles players in the nation. Seniors Gabriella De Santis, Sandy Niehaus, Miho Kowase and Angeles Paz also all notched singles wins for the Scarlet and Gray, with Kowase clinching the win with a three-set victory and Niehaus also prevailing in three.
“It was an absolute battle today,” Melissa Schaub, Ohio State head coach, said. “Vanderbilt is a very tough team and this was a really tough place to come play. I thought we competed really hard, which is what we are all about.”
In doubles, the Buckeye tandem of Niehaus and junior Anna Sanford was defeated on court one by the duo of Astra Sharma and Emily Smith, 6-4. On court three, junior Olivia Sneed and Angeles Paz fell 6-3 to Georgina Sellyn and Fernanda Contreras. The match on court two was abandoned with Di Lorenzo and Kowase up 4-3 over the pair of Emma Kurtz and Christina Rosca.
In singles, the Commodores claimed the first victory when No. 19 Sydney Campbell defeated No. 41 Sanford on court two, 6-2, 6-1, taking a 2-0 match lead.
No. 1 Di Lorenzo then downed No. 2 Sharma on court one 6-2, 6-2 to put the Scarlet and Gray on the board. Senior Gabriella De Santis topped No. 28 Rosca on court three 6-1, 7-6 (3) to tie the match at two.
On court four, Niehaus notched a victory over Sellyn in three sets, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2, to put the Buckeyes ahead of Vanderbilt for the first time. No. 59 Kowase recorded a three set victory, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, on court five over Kurtz, coming back from down 3-1 in the third, to clinch the win for Ohio State. Angeles Paz claimed the final victory on court six over Contreras 7-5, 7-5 to end the match.
The win was the Buckeyes’ third over the Commodores in the last two seasons. Ohio State is 4-0 all-time vs. Vanderbilt.
Up next, the Buckeyes will travel to New Haven, Conn., for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Feb. 10-13.
