RIO GRANDE, P.R. – Clark Engle and Caden Orewiler each carded 1-under 71’s in the 2017 Puerto Rico Classic’s opening round, grabbing a share of 12th place on the 75-player leaderboard and lifting the Buckeyes into fifth place in the highly-competitive 15-team field.
The Buckeyes are eight shots back from Day One leader and ninth-ranked Georgia (-7), but in front of two Top-25 foes in No. 15 Mississippi (+4) and No. 17 North Carolina (+8). Ohio State dropped in 19 birdies overall, tied for the fourth most in the round
Engle and Orewiler combined for seven birdies and only four holes worse than par. Daniel Wetterich racked up a half dozen birdies on his own, pacing the Buckeyes and tied for the second-highest total overall. Wetterich concluded the day at 1-over (73) and inside a group of players tied for 27th place. He excelled on Par 3 scoring, dipping two shots under par (T-1st of 75 players).
Will Grimmer contributed to the team tally as well, registering a 74 (+2). He is just outside the top half of the leaderboard owning a piece of 37th place entering Round Two.
