COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Undermanned Ohio State fought No. 21 Maryland on the road but fell, 86-77, Saturday afternoon at XFINITY Center in College Park.
Marc Loving scored a season-high 24 points to lead the Buckeyes (15-11, 5-8 Big Ten) while Jae’Sean Tate went for 20 and Trevor Thompson tallied his third-consecutive double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Anthony Cowan paced Maryland (21-4, 9-3 Big Ten) with 19 points while Kevin Huerter added 18.
The Terrapins jumped out to a 9-0 lead less than five minutes into the game and shot just over 55 percent for the half, connecting on 7 of 16 shots from beyond the arc, to take a 45-31 advantage into the break. Melo Trimble had nine points at the half while Jaylen Brantley added eight and Huerter chipped in seven for the Terrapins over the first 20 minutes. Loving led the Buckeyes with nine points, C.J. Jackson scored eight and Thompson totaled six points and seven boards before the half.
Ohio State started the second half hot, cutting the Maryland lead to 56-50 on a Jackson 3-pointer with 13:03 remaining but the Terrapins answered with a 10-4 run, capped by a Cowan 3-pointer, to make it a 66-54 game at the 9:49 mark. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Loving got the Buckeyes right back in it at 77-72 at the 3:40 mark but Maryland responded with a pair of treys from Huerter and Cowan put the game out of reach at 83-75 with 39 seconds left to play.
