COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Andrea Ballinger and freshman Mary Beth Hurley of the Ohio State women’s tennis team traveled to Tempe, Ariz., for the 23rd edition of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational.
Day 1 (Friday)
Freshman Mary Beth Hurley posted two wins in singles on the opening day of the tournament. She rallied to win 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, over Oklahoma’s Camila Romero, a 5-8 seed, in the first round. In round two, the Buckeye topped Alessia Dario of Fresno State, 6-3, 6-3.
Junior Andrea Ballinger went 1-1 on the day. In the opening round she lost to Fresno State’s Katerina Stloukalova, 6-2, 6-4. In the consolation draw, Ballinger came from a set down to beat San Diego’s Gemma Garcia, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Hurley and Ballinger teamed up in doubles, posting a 6-3 win over San Diego’s Torres and Chow.
Day 2 (Saturday)
Andrea Ballinger and Mary Beth Hurley opened the day with a doubles match, falling to Garcia and Nonnenmacher of San Diego, 6-1.
In the main draw quarterfinals, Hurley fell to Daniela Pedraza, 6-1, 6-3. Ballinger, in the consolation bracket, lost to Strip of Oklahoma, 6-2, 6-1.
Day 3 (Sunday)
The Buckeye tandem of Andrea Ballinger and Mary Beth Hurley dropped a close doubles match to Dunk and Mayer of Cal, falling in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3).
In singles, Hurley faced Big Ten foe Rabinowitz of Illinois, suffering a 6-1, 6-2 loss. Ballinger took on Torres of San Diego, with Torres prevailing, 7-5, 6-2.
