
Gavin, Ray, Sturgeon Earn Perfect 4.0 GPAs This Summer

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Three Ohio State softball players had perfect summers. Rising sophomore Morgan Ray and rising juniors Bailee Sturgeon and Becca Gavin both earned perfect 4.0 GPAs in the classroom this summer, helping the Buckeyes achieve a 3.4 overall team GPA for the term.
Gavin started 35 games, primarily at catcher but also 13 contests in left field. in her first career start, went one-for-three vs. Virginia Tech (2/26) and later in the same day went two-for-four with a home run and double vs. Furman. In the classroom, she is a biology major who is also a OSU Scholar Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
Ray, a pitcher from Frenchtown, Mt. who was third on the team with 63.0 innings last spring while striking out 46 batters, is a health professions exploration major. Last week, she was one of eight players to be named a NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete. Ray also earned Ohio State Scholar-Athlete honors during her first season with the Scarlet and Gray.
Sturgeon, from nearby Ashville, Ohio and graduate of Teays Valley High School, is majoring in sport industry within the College of Education and Human Ecology. Like Ray, she is a NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete, Academic All-Big Ten honoree and OSU Scholar-Athlete. Sturgeon, an outfielder, played in 34 games last year and scored nine runs.
Ray and Sturgeon’s accolades are the latest in the long line of academic achievements over the past seven months. Ohio State totaled 13 OSU Scholar-Athletes, nine Academic All-Big Ten selections, two Big Ten Distinguished Scholars and eight NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes. Senior Jayla Saibene was one of 16 student-athletes university wide to earn a 4.0 GPA for the 2015-16 academic year.
