Josh Wick cracked the Buckeye lineup for seven of 11 tournaments during his redshirt sophomore campaign, and competed in an eighth event as an individual. His best finish came on the Scarlet Course, earning a share of fourth place in the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate. Wick came in among the Top-10 at the Windon Memorial as well after firing a season-low 68. Josh is joined on the Ohio State men’s golf team by his younger brother, Justin, and his mother, Sarah, is the OSU Athletics nutritionist.
Student Life
What is the best time of year on campus?
To me the best time of the year on campus is the Fall. The weather is awesome and it’s right in the middle of football season, so campus is electric.
What is your preferred mode of transportation to class?
I either am coming from the course or go to the course right after class, so most of the time I drive.
What has been your favorite or most interesting class at OSU?
Accounting with professor Marc Smith. He does everything possible to make you succeed. Though the class was challenging I found it very interesting.
If you had to give an incoming student advice, what would it be?
My suggestion to incoming students would be to find your passion and roll with it. Don’t just pick a major based on the amount of money you will make after school, but pick a major that you are truly interested in and you will be exponentially more successful.
Pop Culture
What social media do you prefer?
I don’t have a huge social media presence, but I probably spend most of my time on Twitter. I use it to keep updated on news and sports.
Which do you watch more: Netflix or TV?
TV, I watched a lot Netflix my freshman year, but of late haven’t watched much. Would you rather read the book or watch the movie?
Watch the movie. I like reading, but if I can watch it on movie I’m going to do that.
What song can you not help but sing-a-long to?
Chicken Fried by Zac Brown Band
Sports
When is your favorite time of your sport’s season?
I like Spring the best. Spring is when our season ramps up. Though it is really busy, it is fun to be constantly competing. Not only are we playing in tournaments every weekend, but their importance increases as the season goes on.
Which team do you most look forward to competing against?
Oklahoma State. Our old head coach is an assistant coach there, so playing against them is always fun. Though it’s good to see him, beating his team is definitely an added incentive.
Do you have any pre-round superstitions or rituals?
Not really. I just try to get as relaxed as possible so when I get out on the course I feel like it’s just a normal casual round.
What is your favorite part about your sport?
Spending time with my teammates. Golf is very much a social sport and I’m lucky to have great teammates that I enjoy hanging out. After every practice or tournament we hang out and whether it’s Tee-K’s impersonations or Will’s stories I am constantly laughing.
What is your favorite athletic memory?
My favorite memory of my time playing golf at Ohio State would have to be during our home tournament this year. It was unseasonably cold and we ended up playing in a snowstorm. On the 16th hole the snow had accumulated so much that Grant Weaver was able to make a snow angel. We continued the round and it ended up being the best finish of my collegiate career on top of all things.
Food
Where is your favorite place to eat at in Columbus? What is the best?
Cap City. I probably go there way too much, but it is by far my favorite restaurant in Columbus. My favorite thing on their menu is their blue cheese chips, though it is just an appetizer I fill up on those every time I go there.
Best meal you have ever eaten, and where did you get it from/who made it?
Any breakfast made by my dad. he doesn’t cook often, but growing up he would always make us breakfast on the weekends. He makes some unique things, like egg on cereal, but they are always great.
Do you have a sweet tooth and if you do, what is your favorite treat?
Even though my Dad is a dentist and my Mom is a nutritionist I for sure have a sweet tooth. One thing that makes my sweet tooth go crazy are starburst jelly beans. If I didn’t have self control, I could go through a whole bag in one sitting.
Miscellaneous
When you are not at practice, what could someone find you doing?
Studying, I wish I could say something cool or interesting, but school is really important to me so I spend most of my time outside of golf studying.
If you could play another sport other than yours, what would it be?
Basketball. I played it in high school and still enjoy playing pick-up with my friends.
If you won the lottery, what would you do?
Go straight to Augusta National and bribe the members with however much money it takes to let me play the course.
What do you most look forward to doing during the summer?
Playing golf with my Dad and friends for fun. We compete so much during the season that it’s nice to just get out and play for fun. I am also going to Bolivia with a bunch of other athletes on a service trip which will be a blast.
If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?
To be able to fly. Don’t really have a `why,’ just think it would be cool to fly
If you could switch places with anyone on your team for a day, who would you choose?
Will Grimmer for sure. He is an awesome guy, but is also one of the most different and interesting people I have ever met. I would love to switch places with him for a day just to see what goes through his mind. He has some of the most unique thoughts and would love to experience how his brain works.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
My dad tells me every day to “pass on a smile.” Though he probably thinks I just blow him off, I take those few words to heart and make that my goal every day. It sounds cheesy, but if you live your life with the goal of making others happy you are going have a very fulfilling life.
Would you be the first O, H, I or last O in a picture?
The I, it is the only letter you really can’t screw up.
What is your favorite part about being a Buckeye?
Just simply being able to call yourself a Buckeye. I grew up in Upper Arlington always dreaming of becoming a Buckeye and I’m happy to say it is everything I dreamed of. It is the best school in the country and it isn’t even close.
