RELATED INFO
KOHLER, Wis. – Buckeyes Will Grimmer and Tee-k Kelly each recorded opening rounds of 70 (-2) in the NCAA Kohler Regional and own a share of fifth place overall in the 75-player field. Both members of the OSU tandem sit a loan stroke back from the top of the leaderboard.
In addition to the low five teams advancing to the NCAA Championships (May 27-June 1) at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore., the top individual from a non-advancing team will punch his ticket to the Pacific Northwest. Of the four players at 3-under and ahead of Grimmer/Kelly, only one is currently on a non-advancing team if play were to end today (Grant Smith’s South Dakota State Jackrabbits are only a shot back from the top-5, however).
Kelly reached 2-under with four birdies overpowering a pair of bogies and shooting 1-under on both the Front and Back 9’s. Grimmer, meanwhile, made up a stroke late in the day by dipping 2-under on the Back 9 following an even-par Front 9. He totaled three birdies and a single bogey in his first career NCAA postseason round. The two Scarlet & Gray-clad golfers posted scores besting 13 Golfstat Top-100 players, including five in the Top-25 and a pair of Top-10 foes.
Grimmer arrived at his 70 by excelling on Par 3’s, ranking second in the entire field with a Par 3 aggregate tally of 1-under. Kelly did most of his damage on the Par 4’s, slotted second at 2-under.
