COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 4-seed Ohio State women’s tennis shut out Youngstown State, 4-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Championship Friday on the Varsity Tennis Courts.
The Buckeyes, hosting NCAA first and second round matches for the first time, will take on No. 27-ranked UCLA at 4 p.m. Saturday in the second round. Ohio State, now 29-2 on the year, is looking to make the first trip to the Round of 16 in program history.
The match vs. the Bruins, who downed Notre Dame 4-1 Friday in Columbus, is scheduled to be played outdoors at the Varsity Tennis Courts. If inclement weather forces the match inside, the teams will face off in the Varsity Tennis Center (880 W. Henderson Road). Ohio State, which has won its last 14 matches, picked up wins on courts one and two in doubles to take a 1-0 lead vs. the Penguins. The squad then won in straight sets on courts two, four and six for the team victory. The win extended the Buckeyes’ home winning streak to a program record 14 and was the program record extending 18th shutout of the year. Ohio State has dropped just three team points during its 14 match winning streak.
Ohio State claimed the doubles point for the 27th time this season. The No. 58-ranked tandem of juniors Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus won 6-1 on court one over Annina Brendel and Noelly Nsimba to improve to 12-0 this spring. On court two, freshman Francesca Di Lorenzo and sophomore Olivia Sneed were 6-2 winners against Dominika Lackova and Sofia Macias and are now 24-2 in dual matches. The match on court three was suspended with the Buckeye duo of juniors Miho Kowase and Ferny Angeles Paz leading 5-1.
Ohio State dropped just three games in the first three matches off the court to complete the sweep. Sneed, ranked No. 113, posted a shutout of her own on court six, downing Ana Stroe 6-0, 6-0, for her eighth straight win. On court two, No. 96-ranked De Santis defeated Brendel, 6-0, 6-1 to put the Buckeyes ahead 3-0 and pick up her seventh win in a row. On court four, Angeles Paz clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Macias. Angeles Paz is 30-6 this season and 22-2 in dual matches.
Ohio State was ahead on the three matches left on court. On No. 1 Di Lorenzo, ranked third, led Lackova 6-1, 4-2, Kowase was up 6-1, 3-2 over Nsibma on court three and on court five No. 81-ranked Niehaus was ahead 6-4, 4-1 against Nehel Sahni.
