COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Tee-k Kelly and the Ohio State men’s golf team are in contention for hardware at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate following stellar performances on Day One. Kelly ranks third and is a lone stroke back from the tournament co-leaders; leading the Buckeyes into second place with one round to play.
Ohio State posted a 7-over 291 total to best 14 of 15 competitors and stay within a two-shot reach of No. 31 UNLV at 5-over (289). The Buckeyes performed admirably in avoiding bogies, pacing the field with 63 pars and slotted fourth with nine birdies. Ohio State will play alongside the Rebels, Michigan State and UAB for Sunday’s 10:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Kelly drove the ball well, setting up a top-10 finish in both Par-4 and Par-5 scoring. The Illinois native ranked second by playing the Par 4’s at even par and tied for sixth at 1-under on Par 5’s. He off-set two bogies with a pair of birdies, surrounded by 14 pars.
Four different Buckeyes are among a 14-way tie for ninth place in the 84-player field. Clark Engle and Max Rosenthal both contributed 2-over 73’s to the team tally as members of the lineup while Grant Weaver and Josh Wick matched them at 73 playing as individuals. Weaver bogeyed his fourth and final holes of the day, hitting par on the other 16 holes (most pars in the tournament). Engle and Wick played rather consistent rounds as well, combining for just three birdies and seven bogies. Rosenthal and Sean Busch withstood roller coaster rides, however. Both tied for the event lead with four birdies, but also committed a pair of double bogies apiece. Busch is tied for 32nd place, representing the Buckeyes as an individual. As did Addison Coll, also grabbing a share of 32nd place at 4-over (75).
Freshmen Will Grimmer and Caleb Ramirez rounded out the OSU lineup. Grimmer registered a 74 to seize a piece of 23rd place while Ramirez came in at 5-over (76) and is tied for 40th to make it 9-for-9 on Buckeyes cracking the top half of the individual leaderboard.
