COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State track and field team closed a picture perfect weekend of competition at the 31st Jesse Owens Track & Field Classic with five victories Saturday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Junior Rachel Weber turned in the top performance of the day for the Scarlet and Gray, racing to a personal-best time of 2:05.12 in the 800-meter run, the second-fastest time in school history behind Big Ten champion Katie Borchers. Weber currently ranks 16th in the NCAA this season in the event and No. 1 in the Big Ten.
Running in her first women’s 200-meter dash since 2013, senior SoSo Walker raced to a time of 23.34 – the sixth-fastest time in OSU outdoor history – to take first place. She also ran the second leg of Ohio State’s winning 4×400-meter relay team. Freshman Karrington Winters, sophomore Maggie Barrie and senior Aisha Cavin combined with Walker for the winning time of 3:40.29.
Cavin enjoyed a productive day for the Buckeyes. Along with running on the first-place 4×4 team, she was a winner in the women’s 400-meter dash in a personal-best time of 53.43 and was runner-up to Walker in the women’s 200-meter dash in a season-best time of 23.50. The Columbus native began her busy day by anchoring the women’s 4×100-meter team to a season-best time of 44.90 and a first-place finish.
On the men’s side, freshman Nick Gray finished just shy of a personal-best time in the men’s 200-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 20.53 seconds to finish second behind professional runner John Lundy (20.46). The Pickerington, Ohio, native also finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 46.86, just behind pro Patrick Lundy of Brooks (46.69) and teammate Champ Page (46.86).
Other highlights
? Junior Aaron Zedella used a season-best throw of 63.05 meters (206-10.00) to finish second in the men’s collegiate hammer throw.
? Freshman DaJuan Seward leapt a personal-best 7.27 meters (23-10.75) to place third in the men’s long jump.
? Sophomore Allyson Simmons cleared a season-best height of 3.80 meters (12-5.50) in the women’s pole vault, placing third.
