COLUMBUS, Ohio — Spencer Sansom, an outfielder from Clovis, Calif., has signed a National Letter of Intent to further her academic and athletic career as member of the Ohio State softball program, head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly announced today.
“We are thrilled to add Spencer to our 2016 class,” said Kovach Schoenly. “She’s a tremendous athlete that can hit for power from the left side and has a cannon for an arm from the outfield. Some of the most successful players have been the one that share a similar trait — they have a deep desire to be a Buckeye! When you play with that kind of passion for something, it can take your skills to a different level. I look forward to coaching Spencer and watching her develop.”
Sansom, who attends Buchanan High School, is a four year varsity letterwinner who last year earned NFCA first team All-Region honors in addition to being a NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete. Buchanan’s offensive player of the year last spring and a CalHiSports.com All-State nominee, Sansom was also an All-Valley and all-conference selection. As a sophomore in 2014, she led her team to the Valley championship game on the way to being named a first team NFCA All-Region selection.
This spring, Sansom is batting .388 with a .823 slugging percentage, 33 RBI, 24 runs scored and nine home runs in 19 games. Buchanan is 15-4 and has 13 games remaining this season.
Sansom plays club ball for the Central California Dirt Dogs and was a member of the 2014 squad that placed third at the prestigious PFG Platinum Nationals. Off the field, she earned the Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Scholastic Federation and participates in Kid’s Day, an annual fundraiser for Valley Children’s Hospital.
Ohio State’s recruiting class now includes four members — Sansom, Amy Balich (Palos Park, Ill./Mother McArthur High School), Andi Farrah (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central High School) and Carley Gaskill (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real High School).
