Columbus, Ohio – The first full day of the 2016 NCAA Championships was a successful one for Ohio State. Diver Colin Zeng took third in the one-meter diving competition while both relays earned honorable mention All-America distinctions.
Andrew Appleby, Matt McHugh, Ching Lim, Kevin Musterait, Dustin Tynes, and Mossimo Chavez all contributed to OSU’s stellar relays.
Zeng’s 435.50 point performance came after his score of 402.00 in prelims. The five-time Big Ten Diver of the Week and two-time Big Ten Champion came into this week as one of collegiate diving’s heavyweights, also evidenced by his three-event sweep at the Zone Diving Meet, and he did not disappoint on day one. Zeng will look to build on his outstanding season tomorrow in the three-meter dive.
Three of his teammates- Aaron Daniels-Freeman, Stephen Romanik, and Clay White- all competed in today’s diving event too, with Romanik having the best score of the three at 309.25. Daniels-Freeman was right behind him at 305.90 and White posted a mark of 265.45.
In both the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays, the Buckeyes had top-12 finishes. The foursome of Appleby, Chavez, McHugh, and Musterait posted a time of 1:17.82 in the 200 free relay, a season-best for Ohio State and a top-5 time in school history. Appleby’s 50 free time of 19.30 was also one of the fastest-ever by a Buckeye.
McHugh and Appleby returned later on for the 400 medley relay and with the help of teammates Lim and Tynes they all posted a new school record with a time of 3:06.42.
Earlier in the day, Brayden Seal also participated in the 500 freestyle prelims, where he posted a time of 4:22.87.
As a team, Ohio State currently sits in 15th place with 38 points. Friday will prove to be a big day, however, with the 200 medley relay, three-meter dive, and a pair of events in which McHugh currently holds a top-4 fastest time.
