SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Tee-k Kelly outplayed 99 competitors to seize medalist honors at the 2016 Lone Star Invitational. He opened the event dipping four strokes under par in Round One before maintaining his early edge throughout by shooting 1-under the rest of the way (68-72-71; -5). Kelly distanced himself from the field by five strokes overall as runner-up Mario Carmona of Rice University finished even par.
Kelly built a considerable cushion in the third round thanks to an eagle and birdie on back-to-back holes, allowing his tournament lead to withstand three bogies over the next 10 holes. He then closed it out with another birdie on the last hole for good measure. The Briggs Ranch Golf Club has been very friendly to Kelly. In last season’s Lone Star Invitational, he cracked the top-10 in a seventh place showing.
Kelly becomes the 46th different Buckeye to win an individual tournament crown since 1974. The group of 46 OSU golfers has totaled 122 tournament victories overall.
The Buckeye senior excelled on holes of all lengths, pacing the entire 100-man field in both Par-3 and Par-4 scoring while ranking seventh on Par 5’s.
As a team, Ohio State recorded the fourth lowest round of any team on the final day. The 293 team total lifted OSU three spots and into a share of eighth place overall in the 17-team event. Will Grimmer assisted the team ascent, posting a 1-over 73 on Tuesday. His best round of the tourney pushed him up 20 slots on the individual leaderboard as well (T-48th). Josh Wick and Sean Busch, too, made upward moves on the final day. Wick registered a 74 while Busch took 75 strokes, each improving their final standing by 13 spots.
Grant Weaver competed as an individual, coming in a tie for 59th after 54 holes played. He rattled off rounds of 75-77-82 to finish 18-over. Caleb Ramirez rounded out the Buckeye contingent, cracking the Scarlet & Gray lineup for the second time this season. The native Californian tied for 64th at 19-over (80-75-80).
