SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Tee-k Kelly avoided having ‘a case of the Mondays’ on Day One of the Lone Star Invitational, registering a 36-hole total of 140 (-4) to lead the tournament heading into Tuesday’s final round. Kelly’s subsequent tallies of 68-72 earned him a three-stroke advantage on a pair of competitors ranking second at 1-under.
Kelly excelled in Par-3 scoring, shooting an event-low 2-under on the day. He also ranked second in the 100-player field on Par 4’s at even par. Kelly’s nine total birdies were third best and complimented by 24 pars (slotted T-6th among all players).
The senior from Illinois surrounded a lone bogey in the opening round with five birdies, snagging the lead by birdieing the 18th. He then quickly erased a double bogey on the first hole of round number two by virtue of back-to-back birdies on Holes 3 & 4. Kelly would dip even further to minus-5 on another birdie three holes later. He momentarily slipped again with a double bogey on the ‘Back 9’ before returning to 4-under on a birdie later in the round.
Senior classmate, Grant Weaver, is next for the Buckeye hierarchy out in Texas – tied for 35th place overall. Weaver’s 75-77 (+8) does not count towards the team score, however, as he is competing as an individual. He buried seven birdies in total, good for sixth most in the competition.
Caleb Ramirez, making his second career collegiate appearance, sits in the upper half of the field in a tie for 46th (+11). He bounced back from an opening-round 80 and climbed a considerable chunk up the leaderboard after his 75 second round. Ramirez’s biggest leap came on consecutive holes. He eagled the 603-yard, Par 5 13th hole; and immediately followed it up with a birdie on the 14th.
Will Grimmer and Josh Wick posted identical scores of 75-83 (+14) and are both tied for 68th place. Sean Busch is in the Buckeye lineup as well, putting forth rounds of 79-84 (+19). Ohio State is slotted 11th in the overall team standings.
