COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 3 Ohio State swept the Big Ten Weekly Awards for the sixth time this season after a tri-meet victory over No. 14 William & Mary and No. 17 Temple Sunday. Redshirt sophomore Sean Melton was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week, while Alec Yoder claimed B1G Freshman of the Week honors along with Alex Diab of Illinois.
A redshirt sophomore from Orlando, Fla., Melton won three events for the Buckeyes: rings (personal-best 16.050), parallel bars (15.650) and high bar (15.200), where he tied teammate Andrew Rickly. Melton’s career-best performance on rings ranks No. 1 in the NCAA this season and No. 2 on the all-time performers list at Ohio State behind former national champion Brandon Wynn. He won parallel bars and high bar for the third meet in a row.
The Gymnast of the Week award is the fifth for Melton this season and the sixth of his career.
Yoder, a native of Indianapolis, was a winner on pommel horse (14.900) and added Top-5 finishes on high bar (third, personal-best 15.150) and rings (fourth, 14.950).
Yoder has won six B1G Freshman of the Week awards for the Buckeyes this season, along with a Gymnast of the Week accolade following the Buckeyes’ victory over Penn State.
