COLUMBUS, Ohio — Two members of the Ohio State softball team — senior Erika Leonard and freshman Emily Clark — have earned Big Ten weekly honors, the conference announced today.
Leonard is the Player of the Week while Clark was selected as the co-Freshman of the Week. The awards come on the heels of their performances at last weekend’s Louisville Slugger Invitational at Arizona State University.
A Cincinnati native, Leonard recorded at least one hit in all four games, including multiple hits in two games. Against eighth-ranked James Madison, she blasted a two-run home run in the third inning to give the Buckeyes a 3-2 and followed that up the next day with a solo home run to straightaway centerfield against Nebraska. To cap her weekend, Leonard went two-for-five yesterday against No. 18 Arizona State with a double to begin a six-run seventh inning that resulted in a 11-5 Ohio State victory. Overall, she hit .438 with three home runs, five RBI and a .875 slugging percentage.
On the year, Leonard is fourth on the team with a .339 average to go along with three home runs, 10 RBI and a .571 slugging percentage. In the classroom, she is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and 2015 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. This spring, she’s also a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award.
Clark, from Prospect, Ohio, batted .500 last weekend (four-for-eight) with three RBI and two doubles in games against Georgetown, No. 23 Nebraska and No. 18 Arizona State. In the win over the Sun Devils, Clark went three-for-four with two doubles, including one that drove in a run. On Friday against Georgetown, her two-run single in the second inning gave Ohio State an early 2-0 lead.
Clark has played in 15 of 17 games thus far with 10 starts. She has seen time at both second base and catcher.
Leonard, Clark and the rest of the Buckeyes continue their Spring Break trip this week with a contest Wednesday at San Diego State beginning at 6 p.m. PST (9 p.m. EST).
