COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Minori Minagawa is one of 15 female semi-finalists for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award, and today was named the sport winner for women’s track and field by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education.
Representing 36 sports, this year’s sport winners were chosen from more than 1,000 outstanding minority student-athletes nominated by their respective institutions.
Minagawa is a two-sport athlete for the Buckeyes, competing in cross country in the fall and track and field during the winter and spring. A native of Dublin, Ohio, she is a 4.0 student, Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, USTFCCCA Academic All-American, Academic All-Big Ten selection and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.
To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities. The NCAA Office of Inclusion has partnered with Diverse to support the standout class of scholar athletes.
Past recipients of the award include: Baylor University’s (2011) Robert Griffin III, Heisman Trophy winner; the University of Tennessee’s (2003) Kara Lawson, an ESPN analyst who played for the WNBA’s Sacramento Monarchs; San Diego State University’s (1993) Marshall Faulk, NFL Hall of Famer; and the University of Kansas’ (1996) Jaque Vaughn, head coach of the NBA’s Orlando Magic.
