COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team will host the 15th-annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic October 3-4. Games will be played both at Fred Beekman Park, located on the Ohio State campus, and Buckeye Field. The event, which the Buckeyes have hosted since the 2001 campaign, has become one of the largest fundraisers for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in central Ohio.
A total of 22 teams will represent Ohio in an event that has raised nearly $200,000 in the past 14 years for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. Of the 22 teams, 19 of them will be representing Ohio from schools, including: Ohio State, Bowling Green, Ashland, Otterbein, Dayton, Miami (Ohio), Ohio, Wright State, Owens County Community College, Rio Grande, Capital, Ohio Dominican, Ursuline, Toledo, Denison, Walsh, Oberlin and Ohio Valley. Three schools are traveling to the Buckeye state: Eastern Michigan, Northern Kentucky, Hillsdale and Danville County Community College.
Ohio State opens play vs. Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 12:45 p.m. on Field 1. On Sunday, it will split its team into two squads – OSU Scarlet and OSU Gray. Scarlet faces Northern Kentucky at 9:30 a.m. at Buckeye Field with Team Gray going up against Toledo at 11:45 a.m., also at Buckeye Field. On Saturday, there will be a free clinic for children at Buckeye Field from 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Admission to the games is free, while entrance to the OCCC is a $5 donation with all proceeds benefiting the Stefanie Spielman Fund. Fred Beekman Park is located west of State Route 315 at Lane Avenue.
Under fourth-year head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly, the Buckeyes return 16 letterwinners from 2015 and welcome six newcomers (five freshmen, one sophomore).
