COLUMBUS, Ohio – On a rainy Tuesday night in Columbus, the Ohio State men’s soccer team claimed a 1-0 shutout victory against Louisville at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 3-4-2 overall and unbeaten in their last four matches, while the Cardinals drop to 4-3-3 in 2015.
“It was a great win against a great opponent tonight vs. Louisville,” head coach John Bluem said. “Liam played a beautiful ball to Jensen and he was able to finish strong in front of the net. I thought our guys defended extremely well in some tough conditions. We took care of business at home in these last three matches and now we need to continue that confidence this weekend on the road.”
Junior forward Danny Jensen scored the lone goal of the match in the 55th minute when he headed in his second score of the year from 10 yards out. Liam Doyle sent a beautiful ball in from 35 yards out from the near side on a free kick chance to set up Jensen for the score at 54:27.
“Liam played a left-footed ball in from the right side so I knew it would be headed towards the keeper,” Jensen, who scored his 11th career goal, said. “I was lucky enough to get a header on it and it found the back of the net. It was a total team effort tonight.”
That would be all the Buckeyes would need vs. the Cardinals to collect their second consecutive shutout of the year. Senior goalkeeper Chris Froschauer made two saves in the contest to improve to 3-4-2 on the season, while the OSU backline did its job in clearing out six Louisville corners and holding the Louisville attack to just seven shots with just two on goal. Overall shots were 9-7 in favor of the Buckeyes, while Ohio State held a 7-6 lead in corners.
The first half of the game started slow for both sides in wet conditions. The Buckeyes were without a shot until the 23rd minute when the team unleashed its lone scoring flurry starting with shots by Kyle Culbertson and Yaw Amankwa which then ended with back to back corner attempts, both failing to yield a goal. The rest of the half remained scoreless with the only scoring chance being a header by Zach Mason in the 44th minute. Froschauer made back-to-back saves in the eighth minute vs. Louisville to keep it scoreless.
Ohio State heads to East Lansing, Mich., this weekend for a Big Ten contest vs. Michigan State. The game will be live on BTN at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
