Buckeyes Fall at Northwestern, 2-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – The Ohio State men’s soccer team fell, 2-1, at Northwestern Friday Night at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 1-4-0 overall and 0-1-0 in Big Ten play, while the Wildcats improve to 1-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference action.
Joey Calistri scored both goals for Northwestern to give the home squad a 2-0 lead. However, Ohio State continued to battle to the final whistle. Following an own goal in the 82nd minute to cut the deficit to 2-1, the Scarlet and Gray had one final chance on a free kick from just outside the 18, but Liam Doyle’s low strike was saved by NU keeper Zak Allen.
The Wildcats made it a 1-0 contest in the 17th minute when Calistri scored in front of net following a cross from the far side by Cole Missimo.
Ohio State had several chances to find the back of the net in the first half. Just a minute before the NU score, Greg Solawa knocked a shot off the middle of the crossbar from 25 yards out. In the tenth minute, Kenny Cunningham looked like he scored a goal but the offside flag was waved. A header by Doyle went wide of net on a corner during the 35th minute. Marcus McCrary struck a shot from outside the 18 in the 41st minute, but the NU keeper made the save. Danny Jensen tried to put in the rebound, but his sliding shot was blocked from the far side. At half, shots were 5-4 in favor of the Buckeyes, while the Buckeyes have a 2-1 lead in corners.
Following halftime, Ohio State earned a free kick just outside the 18, but Doyle’s shot went wide right in the 47th. McCrary’s shot in the 60th minute just went wide left of the near post.
The Wildcats then extended their lead to 2-0 in the 61st minute after Calistri headed in a goal in front of the OSU net. Cunningham had a shot on goal in the 75th, but was saved. The Buckeyes had a third corner in the 79th, but the NU keeper came out in front of goal to end the chance.
In the 82nd minute, the Buckeyes finally got on the board on an own goal by Northwestern following a corner kick from the near side. Ohio State continued to build pressure on the NU defense, but couldn’t find a second goal. After a fifth OSU corner, a shot by Jensen from the near side just went over the bar in the 86th minute. Overall shots were 14-9 in favor of the Buckeyes, while Ohio State held a 5-1 lead in corners.
Goalkeeper Chris Froschauer falls to 1-4 on the year after making three saves.
Ohio State is back in action at Akron at 7 p.m. ET Sept. 16.
