Buckeye History at the NCAA Championships
Men
Ohio State athletes have earned a total of 29 NCAA titles at the NCAA outdoor championships. Chris Nelloms (200-meter dash in 1993) was the last Buckeye to earn an individual title, more than 70 years after the Buckeyes’ first national champion, Pete Stinchcomb, captured his long jump crown in 1922. Olympic great Jesse Owens leads all Buckeyes with a total of eight national titles to his name.
The Buckeyes’ lone team championship came in 1929 under head coach F.R. Castleman. The 1992 season witnessed a second-place finish under head coach Russ Rogers, as the Buckeyes swept both the 4×100-meter and 4×400-meter titles.
Women
Two Buckeyes have won national titles, both in the 100m hurdles: Christina Manning in 2012 and Donica Merriman in 2001.
Former coach Russ Rogers guided the Buckeyes to a 14th-place finish in 1999, the best in program history. Head coach Karen Dennis and the Buckeyes finished 21st in 2012.
Men Vault to No. 16 in the USTFCCCA Rankings; Women 27th
The Ohio State men’s track and field team jumped to No. 16 in the June 1 edition of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) rankings, the highest ranking for the Buckeyes in at least eight seasons and the first appearance by the team in the Top 25 since 2013. The women’s team is ranked 27th overall, its highest ranking since 2012.
The Buckeye men gained nearly 50 points — moving from a total of 59.79 to 103.95 — and climbed 17 spots from their previous rank of 33 prior to the NCAA East Preliminary Round. The current rankings represent the final poll of the season ahead of the NCAA championships, providing an idea of where teams are projected to finish at the national meet.
An impressive trip to the East prelims in Jacksonville, Fla., accounted for the jump in the rankings for the Buckeyes. The men’s 4×400-meter relay team added 26.17 points to the team total with a fourth-ranked time in Division I this season (3:02.67), while Neff contributed 21.92 points after running a personal-best and sixth-ranked time of 8:36.88 in the steeplechase. In addition, a personal-best and 10th-ranked time of 45.67 by Bruton in the 400-meter dash netted 12.92 points, while Blanks contributed four points with an 18th-place national standing in the 400-meter hurdles.
Three Big Ten men’s teams are featured in the USTFCCCA Top 25, led by Big Ten champion and 11th-ranked Illinois. Penn State is ranked 15th, followed by the Scarlet and Gray. Florida is the No. 1-ranked team, with Oregon ranked second and Texas A&M third.
The women’s team climbed 10 spots from their pre-East Preliminary standing, gaining nearly 14 points in the process. Ohio State’s top point contributors were the 4×400-meter relay team, ranked third nationally with a season-best time of 3:28.37, Cavin in the 200-meter dash (ninth, 22.86 seconds) and Walker in the 400-meter dash (10th, 45.67).
Ohio State is one of four Big Ten women’s teams ranked in the Top 30, led by Big Ten champion and 14th-ranked Michigan State. Nebraska is 22nd, followed by No. 23 Michigan, No. 24 Wisconsin and the Buckeyes. Oregon is the No. 1-ranked team in the country, with Arkansas ranked second and Kentucky third.
Faust, Borchers Named to Capital One Academic All-District Team
Faust and Borchers were named Capital One Academic All-District First Team selections, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced May 22. Faust and Borchers are now eligible for Academic All-America honors, which will be awarded in June.
Faust and Borchers were among 22 student-athletes — 11 men and 11 women — to earn the accolade from District 5. The Academic All-District squads recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Faust, a native of Harvey, Ill., won the Big Ten 200-meter title last weekend at the Big Ten outdoor championships. He is a two-time conference champion and three-time Second Team All-American. In the classroom, Faust is a two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, along with a four-time OSU Scholar Athlete. A special education major, he was also a member of the 2014 Academic All-District team.
Borchers, from Russia, Ohio, defended her Big Ten title in the 800-meter dash last Sunday at the conference outdoor meet. She is a three-time Big Ten champion on the track who owns or is a part of nine OSU school records. In cross country, she is a two-time All-American, All-Region and All-Big Ten performer. A 2015 Big Ten Medal of Honor winner, Borchers is a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and four-time OSU Scholar Athlete, who also earned Academic All-District honors in 2014. She graduated in May with a degree in exercise science.
