COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University men’s golf team is slotted second after posting a 2-over 282 team total on Day One of the NCAA New Haven Regional. All five members of the Buckeye lineup are slotted in the top-20 individually entering Friday’s second round.
Ohio State is a lone stroke back from tournament-leading USF (+1), but more importantly owns a seven-shot cushion on a pair of schools tied for sixth place as the top-5 teams advance to the NCAA Championships. The Buckeyes went 4-under par as a team on the final three holes, utilizing the big push to ascend into second place.
The Scarlet & Gray registered a 2-over ledger on Par 4s, besting the field on such holes by a half dozen shots. Sophomore Clark Engle led the Par-4 excellence, going 4-under individually to lead the entire event. The All-Big Ten honoree has put himself in contention for the top spot on the player leaderboard as well. Engle sunk six birdies (second-most in the tournament) en route to a 68 (-2), good for a share of second place overall. Rigel Fernandes of USF paces all comers, sitting atop at 6-under (64).
Fourth-year players Boo Timko and Grant Weaver both carded rounds of 71 (+1) and are tied for 12th place. Timko tallied nine-hole scores of 1-under and 2-over on the Front and Back 9s, respectively, while Weaver took the opposite route by going 2-over on the Front and 1-under on the Back.
Addison Coll and Tee-k Kelly rounded out the leaderboard top-20, both earning a share of 20th place at 2-over (72). Each accumulated four bogeys with Coll dropping in birdies on Holes #1 and #4; and Kelly burying birdies on the 12th and 17th holes.
It was a complete team effort by Ohio State, evidenced by only one other team, LSU, managing to place all five individuals inside the top-40 (all five Buckeyes finished in the top-20). The Tigers mustered no elite scores, however, as the entire lineup ranged from 30th to 39th place and the team ranks 10th overall.
