?COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State women’s tennis team earned an at-large bid into the 2015 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Tournament and will face Oklahoma in the opening round of tournament action at 1 p.m. ET May 8 in Nashville, Tenn. The 64-team bracket and host sites were revealed Tuesday on the NCAA.com Selection Show with the Buckeyes earning one of 32 at-large bids. The selection marks Ohio State’s second-straight trip to the tournament and 12th program appearance.
“It’s a big achievement for our team and the season we’ve had,” head coach Melissa Schaub said. “We’re excited to go out there and have a chance to compete. We know Oklahoma’s going to be tough. They come from a tough conference and we’ll start getting ready for them now.”
No. 4 seed Vanderbilt will host the Buckeyes and Sooners’ match and face Murray State, the automatic qualifier from the Ohio Valley Conference, in the first round. The first round winners will meet May 9, with a berth in the round of 16 on the line. Winners advancing through the first and second rounds will head to Waco, Texas for the NCAA Championships May 15-19 at the Hurd Tennis Center. The event will be hosted by Baylor University.
The opening round match between the Buckeyes and Sooners is the third meeting between the programs. The squads last met Feb. 27, 2011 during ITA Kickoff Weekend, a 4-0 Buckeye setback. In the first time meeting, Ohio State posted a 6-1 victory vs. the Sooners at home Jan. 26, 2008.
Ohio State is one of four Big Ten teams to make the tournament, including Big Ten regular season and tournament champion Michigan, Northwestern and Purdue. The Buckeyes have faced nine NCAA tournament-bound squads this season.
The Scarlet and Gray have rewritten the record books this spring. With a record of 20-6 entering the NCAA tournament, the 20 team victories ties the program high set by the 2010 squad, while the team’s 10 wins in conference play was a program best. The Buckeyes amassed an 11-match win streak from March 6 to April 17, a program record, and tied the highest ITA ranking in program history at No. 17.
