COLUMBUS, Ohio –Sandy Niehaus, a sophomore on the No. 17-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team, was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week Tuesday, the Big Ten Conference announced. The weekly award is the first of her career and the third selection for the Buckeyes this season. Sophomore Gabriella De Santis previously earned the honor March 10 and 31.
Niehaus was a driving force behind Ohio State’s two B1G road victories this past weekend, earning a pair of singles and doubles wins vs. Iowa and Nebraska. The Cincinnati, Ohio, extended her singles win streak to 10-consecutive matches as she defeated Iowa’s Anastasia Reimchen and Nebraska’s Izabella Zgierska in straight sets. Niehaus is 8-0 in conference singles matches this spring. Paired with classmate De Santis, the 44th-ranked duo notched two doubles wins on court one to improve to 5-1 against B1G opponents.
The Scarlet and Gray, who are ranked 17th this week to match the program high, have crafted a record 11 straight wins and have nine conference victories for the first time since the 2000 season.
Niehaus and the Buckeyes will be back in action at 3 p.m. Friday on their home courts to defend their undefeated B1G record vs. fellow unbeaten No. 14-ranked Michigan. The winner of the match will capture a share of the Big Ten regular season title. The Buckeyes wrap up their home slate Sunday with a doubleheader vs. Michigan State at noon followed by Akron at 5 p.m.
