Athletes of the Week
Drew Moling, men’s gymnastics
- With a fourth-place finish on rings and season-best score of 15.600, Moling received his first All-America award at the 2015 NCAA Event Championships on Saturday. Moling, a two-time team captain for the Buckeyes, closes his career at Ohio State as an All-American and All-Big Ten performer.
Gabriella De Santis, women’s tennis
- De Santis, ranked 40th, improved to 6-0 in Big Ten singles play with a win over Nebraska’s Maggy Lehmicke. She also contributed a victory in doubles play, alongside teammate Sandy Niehaus.
No. 1 Women’s Rowing
- The women’s rowing team won eight races against No. 18 Wisconsin and No. 19 Minnesota Saturday at the Big Ten Double Dual on Griggs Reservoir.
- Ohio State finished the day a perfect 5-0 against the Gophers in head-to-head competition and 2-3 against the Badgers in dual races, with both varsity eights earning wins.
No. 11 Men’s Lacrosse (10-3, 3-0 B1G)
- The men’s lacrosse team claimed the Creator’s Trophy with a 13-8 win over Michigan Sunday in Michigan Stadium.
- The Buckeyes are winners of their last three games and stand 6-1 in their last seven outings.
No. 18 Women’s Tennis (17-4, 9-0 B1G)
- The women’s tennis team extended its program-record win streak to 11 matches as it swept Nebraska, 7-0, Sunday afternoon on the road at the Nebraska Tennis Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.
- Previously, the squad set the program record on Friday afternoon in Iowa City, Iowa, as the Buckeyes defeated Iowa, 5-2, to earn their 10th straight win this spring.
- In all, it is the first time since the 1999-00 season the Scarlet and Gray have recorded nine wins in conference play.
No. 11 Men’s Tennis (20-7, 7-1 B1G)
- The men’s tennis team topped off their home schedule for 2015 with a pair of 4-0 victories Sunday in Columbus. Ohio State took down Purdue outside on the Varsity Tennis Courts 4-0 before moving indoors to defeat Wright State 4-0.
Men’s Basketball
- Ohio State freshman D’Angelo Russell was honored with the Jerry West Award, given to the nation’s top collegiate shooting guard, Friday evening at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show presented by Wendy’s at Club Nokia in Los Angeles.
Football
- The football program held its fourth annual Student Appreciation Practice Saturday morning at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
- The team practiced a little later than usual and went for a good two hours before stopping to engage in some student-centered activities. About 1,700 students and guests were at the practice.
Men’s Golf
- The men’s golf team hosted a 14-team tournament on the Scarlet Course (par 71) this weekend and came out of the event with a third-place showing.
- Redshirt junior Grant Weaver was in contention for medalist honors until the very end before ultimately shaking out in fifth place individually.
Baseball (23-9, 7-2 B1G)
- It’s safe to say the baseball team has a flair for the dramatic. For the third-consecutive game, the Buckeyes claimed a victory in walk-off fashion Friday evening.
- Ohio State rallied from a three-run deficit in the final three innings to defeat UNLV, 6-5, in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off single by Troy Kuhn to extend the team’s win-streak to a season-best six straight games.
No. 11 Men’s Volleyball (21-6, 11-3 MIVA)
- The men’s volleyball team celebrated the careers of its senior class Saturday night in St. John Arena, capping off Senior Night with a 3-0 victory (25-23, 25-17, 25-21) over No. 14 IPFW.
- Ohio State completed a season sweep of the Mastodons and clinched a top-3 seed for the upcoming conference tournament.
- On Thursday, the Buckeyes earned their 20th win of the season against head coach Pete Hanson’s alma mater, Ball State.
Men’s Gymnastics
- Moling and junior Alex Johnson earned All-America honors at the 2015 NCAA Event Championships Saturday night at the Lloyd Noble Center. Moling tied for fourth on rings, while Johnson placed eighth overall on high bar with a score of 14.550.
Track & Field
- The track and field team competed at the 2015 All-Ohio Championships Friday and Saturday in Oxford, Ohio. Competing with partial squads, the Ohio State men finished in first place and the women second overall.
- The OSU men posted a number of impressive performances in the field. Redshirt junior J.C. Murasky was victorious in two events at Miami for the second-consecutive weekend, winning the shot put at 19.13 meters (62-9.25) and the discus at 51.28 meters (168-3.00).
Softball (22-16, 6-6 B1G)
- Cammi Prantl, Taylor Watkins, Anna Kirk and Maddy McIntyre combined to drive in 10 runs as Ohio State completed a three-game series sweep of Michigan State with a 15-5 five-inning run rule victory on Sunday. With the victory, the Buckeyes extend their winning streak to four games.
Women’s Hockey
- Jenny Potter has been named the head coach of the Ohio State women’s hockey team, Shaun Richard, associate athletics director for sport administration, announced Sunday.
- One of the most decorated female hockey players of all time, Potter brings the experience of four Olympic medals, including one gold, to Columbus as the third head coach in program history.
