COLUMBUS, Ohio — The No. 18 Ohio State women’s tennis team extended its program-high win streak to 11 matches as it swept Nebraska, 7-0, Sunday afternoon on the road at the Nebraska Tennis Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. With their second shutout in conference play, the Buckeyes improve to 17-4 overall and maintain a perfect 9-0 record in B1G outings this spring. It is the first time since the 1999-00 season the Scarlet and Gray have recorded nine wins in conference play.
“This entire weekend has been a total team effort,” head coach Melissa Schaub said. “The whole team stepped up big with a couple players out. We are looking forward to being back at home next weekend with a couple big matches to close output regular season.”
The two remaining undefeated teams in the Big Ten Conference — Ohio State and Michigan — will collide 3 p.m. Friday in Columbus, Ohio. The match is scheduled to be played outdoors at the Varsity Tennis Courts, but will be moved to the Varsity Tennis Center in the case of inclement weather. The Wolverines are also 9-0 in conference outings. The Buckeyes wrap up their home slate Sunday, April 19 with a doubleheader vs. Michigan State at noon followed by Akron at 5 p.m.
The Buckeyes gained a 1-0 advantage behind wins on courts one and three, earning the doubles point for the ninth time in as many B1G matches this spring. 40th-ranked Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus claimed an 8-5 victory on court one vs. Mary Hanna and Izabella Zgierska, while Nicole Flower and Grainne O’Neill collected their second win this weekend as they defeated Katerina Matysova and Mackenna Maddox, 8-6, at No. 3 to clinch the point. Sophomore Miho Kowase and freshman Olivia Sneed dropped an 8-4 decision on court two to Maggy Lehmicke and Lisa Andersson.
Ohio State continued to roll in singles play, claiming five straight set wins and one super tiebreaker victory to secure the shutout vs. the Cornhuskers. Sneed tallied the first win for the Buckeyes with a 6-3, 6-1 win on court four. De Santis improved to 6-0 in conference play on court one as she took down Lehmicke, 6-4, 6-2, while Niehaus extended her own singles win streak to 10 straight matches with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph vs. Zgierska at No. 2.
Kowase collected her 15th win of the dual season vs. Hanna, 6-3, 6-4, on court three. Flower posted her first win in conference singles play this spring as she prevailed 6-1, 6-4, on court six vs. Maddox. O’Neill stormed back from a 6-1 loss in her first set against Andersson to force a super tiebreaker on court five. The Blessington, Ireland, product sealed the team shutout as she won the tiebreaker, 10-1, and captured her seventh-consecutive victory in singles play.
