Richardson, Schirmer Make U.S. Collegiate National Team – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Buckeye duo of Tyler Richardson and Luisa Schirmer have been selected to participate in the U.S. Collegiate National Team (CNT) program that will train and compete in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships from June 21-29 in New Orleans. Richardson and Schirmer battled their way through the U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts in February, where 238 athletes were evaluated, to receive two of just 36 spots on the CNT.
For the fourth consecutive year, USA Volleyball will have its CNT (formerly known as the U.S. Women’s National A2 Team) represented at the USAV Girls’ Junior National Championships (GJCNC). This marks the third straight year Ohio State has been represented in the program as Katie Mitchell made the team last year and Kaitlyn Leary did so in 2013. Buckeye Ami Stevens participated in the program as well back in 2006.
“USA Volleyball is excited to bring these three dozen outstanding collegiate athletes together for the College National Team program in New Orleans,” Tom Pingel, USA Volleyball senior director, said. “It’s always beneficial to the development of our National Team pipeline to get this group in the gym during the summer, as well as in front of the juniors playing at the GJNC so they can see the next level of play. Over the past four years, our CNT athletes have served as outstanding role models for these young athletes.”
The CNT program includes nine middle blockers (including Richardson), nine outside hitters (including Schirmer), six setters, six opposites and six liberos. After the training portion of the program, the 36 athletes will be divided into three equal teams which will compete in a round-robin event June 26-29. This program is considered a second tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team.
