COLUMBUS, Ohio — Sophomore Gabriella De Santis was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week for the second time this season Tuesday afternoon, as announced by the Big Ten Conference office. De Santis led the No. 22 Ohio State women’s tennis team to its seventh- and eighth-consecutive wins this weekend, posting two victories at No. 1 singles and a win at No. 1 doubles. The Buckeyes defeated two ranked conference opponents — No. 28 Purdue (4-3) and No. 43 Indiana (6-1) — to remain an undefeated 7-0 in Big Ten contests and improve to 14-4 overall this spring.
The Caracas, Venezuela native posted an 8-6 victory, alongside sophomore Sandy Niehaus, to help the Buckeyes claim the decisive doubles point against the Boilermakers on March 27 at the Varsity Tennis Center. In singles play, De Santis defeated fellow Venezuela native Daniela Vidal, 6-4, 6-0. On Sunday vs. Indiana, De Santis topped Katie Klyczek, 6-4, 6-1, to improve to 5-0 at No. 1 singles this spring.
The recognition marks her third career selection as the Big Ten Athlete of the Week (March 10, 2015 and April 1, 2014).
Up next, the Buckeyes will travel to Austin, Texas, to compete against No. 32 Texas at 1 p.m. April 4 for the first meeting between the two schools.
