COLLEGE PARK, Md.— Maryland’s Corey Schwartz hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to complete a nine-run comeback as the Terps took game one of a three-games series from Ohio State on Friday evening. Maryland improves to 21-13 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten while Ohio State is now 15-13, 0-4.
The Buckeyes scored at least once in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 10-2 lead. In the top of the fifth, Ohio State struck for five runs on four hits, loading the bases with nobody out, highlighted by a two-run single from Taylor White, a bases loaded walk and a RBI single from Caitlin Conrad, bringing her team-high total on the year to 26.
In the second inning, three runs crossed the plate, keyed by a pinch-hit RBI double from Jayla Saibene that scored two runs. On the night, Saibene went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a walk. Over the last 15 games, she is hitting .421 (8-for-19) with five RBI and one double.
Ohio State’s lead increased to 4-0 in the third inning thanks a sacrifice fly by Erika Leonard and then 5-0 in the third inning after another sacrifice fly, this one by Maddy McIntyre, to make the score 5-0. Maryland, one of the top offensive teams in the Big Ten, scored twice in the fourth inning to make the score 5-2, once in the fifth to draw to within seven, 10-3, and four times in the sixth one just two hits to close the gap to three, 10-7.
In the seventh, a walk, a fly out and back to back doubles prompted a pitching change, as starter Olivia O’Reilly came back out from the bullpen with the score 10-9 and a runner on second. Schwartz took the third pitch of her at bat over the left center field fence to complete the Terps’ comeback.
O’Reilly (8-4) pitched three scoreless innings at the start of the game and was then relieved by Shelby Hursh in the fifth inning. Alex DiDomenico also pitched 0.2 innings of relief.
The Buckeyes and Terps resume their series on Saturday, March 28 at 2:00 p.m. The game can be seen live on BTN Plus.
