UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Behind a fourth-place finish in the all-around from senior Drew Moling, the ninth-ranked Ohio State men’s gymnastics team placed fifth overall at the 2015 Big Ten Team Championships Friday night at Rec Hall. The Buckeyes closed the day with a team score of 429.350.
As a team, OSU posted the top score of the day on high bar (73.650), qualifying all five competing athletes on the apparatus for event finals on Saturday. The team also turned in a season-best score of 73.850 on vault.
“I’m very proud of how the team performed tonight considering all the obstacles we overcame this year,” Ohio State head coach Rustam Sharipov said after the meet. “Pommel horse was rough, but we rebounded with a season-best score on vault and a great effort on high bar. “This is a good start to the postseason for our team, and we’ll look to finish strong in the coming weeks.”
Moling, competing in his first all-around at the college level, totaled a six-event score of 86.300. He was boosted by a fourth-place finish on high bar (15.000) and a sixth-place tie on parallel bars (14.950).
“I’m very impressed with Drew’s finish in the all-around,” Sharipov said. “It is a tremendous achievement to take fourth at Big Ten’s in your first collegiate all-around competition.”
The Buckeyes qualified a total of seven athletes for event finals on Saturday night. Moling qualified on parallel bar and on high bar along with four other Buckeyes: junior Alex Johnson, senior Alex Nork, freshman Seth Delbridge and sophomore Andrew Rickly. Freshman Alexander Wilson and senior Larry Mayer will compete in vault finals.
“We’re looking forward to featuring seven athletes in event finals,” Sharipov added. “It’s exciting that two of our freshmen, Seth Delbridge and Alex Wilson, made finals, a great accomplishment for their first season.”
Ohio State opened the meet on floor exercise with a team score of 71.600. Redshirt junior Andrew Teal led the way with a routine that earned a 14.700 from the judges. Following a bye, the Buckeyes moved to pommel horse for the third rotation, totaling a score of 65.950. Freshman Cody Teaney was the top finisher for the Scarlet and Gray with a 13.700.
Rotation four featured OSU on rings, where the Buckeyes turned in a team score of 71.700. Moling’s 14.800 was the top score for Ohio State and earned the senior an 11th-place tie.
The Buckeyes gained huge momentum in the fifth rotation with their season-best performance on vault. Wilson tied for first overall with a 15.150, just shy of a personal best. Mayer was seventh with a 14.950, while Delbridge just missed qualifying for finals with a score of 14.800, tying for 10th.
Ohio State continued the momentum from vault on the sixth rotation, parallel bars. Moling tied for sixth, with Wilson adding a score of 14.550 for the Buckeyes. The Scarlet and Gray closed the meet with their team high score on high bar.
