Ohio State Registers 5-2 Loss to No. 8 North Dakota – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team fell 5-2 to North Dakota in its opening game of the 2015 WHCA Playoffs on Friday afternoon in Grand Forks, N.D. The Buckeyes (17-15-3, 12-14-3-1 WCHA) and eighth-ranked North Dakota (21-11-3, 17-9-3-2 WCHA) will resume the series Saturday at 2:07 p.m. CT/3:07 p.m. ET.
North Dakota claimed a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the matchup. Senior Josefine Jakobsen put UND on the board off a feed from junior Tanja Eisenschmid. Although scoreless in the stanza, the Buckeyes posted a 7-4 advantage in shots, while starting goalie Stacy Danczak was credited with three saves.
In the second period, the Buckeyes rebounded with two goals of their own. Senior Kari Schmitt lit the lamp first, scoring her seventh of the season on a power play at 10:02. Fellow senior Kayla Sullivan assisted her on the play. Backed by senior Sara Schmitt, Ohio State tallied another power play goal three minutes later. Scoring her fifth goal of the season, Schmitt gave the Scarlet and Gray a one-goal lead. North Dakota later tied it up in the final minute, profiting off a goal from senior Andrea Dalen. For the period, the Buckeyes outshot UND, 7-5.
Dalen scored UND’s go-ahead goal approximately nine minutes into the period. Taking a 3-2 lead over the Scarlet and Gray, Dalen notched her second goal of the game and 10th of the season. The home squad then added a pair of empty netters, as Ohio State pulled Danczak with a 1:30 remaining.
Ohio State held a 23-18 advantage in shots for the game. Danczak, a redshirt junior this season, picked up her 16th start, finishing with 13 saves. North Dakota’s Shelby Amsley-Benzie was credited with 21 saves while defending the UND goal.
Both of the Buckeyes’ goals were netted on power plays, as Ohio State went 2-for-4 overall. On the penalty kill, the Buckeyes were 2-for-2.
