COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State senior Katie Borchers was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week by the conference office on Monday on the heels of her record-setting runs at the SPIRE D-1 Invitational in Geneva, Ohio, Friday and Saturday.
Borchers broke two Ohio State indoor records over the weekend at SPIRE Institute. On Friday, she cruised to a runner-up time of 2:45.05 in the 1000-meter run, demolishing the previous OSU record by more than seven seconds. On Saturday, the Russia, Ohio, native turned in a time of 4:41.19 in the mile, bettering the previous record set by Maureen Cogan in 1984 by nearly four seconds. Her mile time ranks third in the Big Ten and 24th in Division I this season.
Records in the 1000 and mile add to the school-record time of 2:05.56 the senior posted at the Meyo Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind., Feb. 7, a time that ranks 10th in Division I this season and first in the Big Ten.
The weekly award is the third for Borchers in her Buckeye career and first on the track. She previously earned B1G Athlete of the Week honors twice during the 2014 cross country season.
