PALM COAST, Fla. – Ohio State dropped a pair of 3-2 matches on the final day of the 2015 Big Ten Match Play Championship, falling to Purdue and Minnesota. Tee-k Kelly was victorious in both of his individual matches on Monday though, topping Gopher Runar Arnorsson (3 & 2) and Boilermaker Fernando Barco (5 & 3).
Boo Timko mirrored Kelly’s two-of-three performance overall, picking up individual wins against Minnesota and in the first round versus Michigan.
Tournament Bracket – Complete Results
Kelly started the day off on the wrong foot, giving away his first two holes to Barco with a bogey and double bogey. The Wheaton, Ill., native quickly regrouped, however, taking the next three holes to go `1UP’ heading to the sixth tee. The next three holes were a stalemate after the seventh was halved and each combatant seized one of the next two. Kelly then swept `the turn’ with two more wins, grabbing the ninth and 10th holes. He would add on more damage before ultimately closing it out, 5 & 3.
Engle dug himself a two-hole deficit as well before storming back to earn an individual match triumph against the Boilers. His bout with Austin Eoff was `all-square’ as late as the 13th hole. The Buckeye then gathered three of the final four holes to clinch it, 2 & 1.
Kelly’s second win of the day was a come-from-behind effort, too. The junior once again trailed by two holes early on. A three-hole winning streak in Holes 5-7 pulled Kelly ahead for good in what would end up being a 3 & 2 winner over Arnorsson.
Timko found himself in a similar situation against Minnesota, seeing Riley Johnson `2UP’ walking to the sixth tee. Just as Engle and Kelly did (twice), the senior Buckeye climbed back into contention and emerged victorious by round’s end. Timko buried a birdie on the 17th for the go-ahead hole. He would go on to halve the 18th and secure a `1UP’ win.
