Borchers Breaks 1000m Record at SPIRE – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the second week in a row, senior Katie Borchers set a new Ohio State indoor record – this time in the 1000-meter run – to highlight day one of the SPIRE Division I Invitational at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Borchers cruised to a runner-up time of 2:45.05, demolishing the previous record by more than seven seconds. Last week at the Meyo Invitational, the Russia, Ohio, native broke her own school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:05.56.
Freshman Allyson Simmons picked up her second win as a Buckeye in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 3.82 meters (12-6.25). Simmons is the school indoor-record holder in the event (3.90 meters/12-9.50).
Ohio State dominated in both the men’s and women’s 200-meter dash. Sophomore LaMar Bruton and senior Timothy Faust finished 1-2 on the men’s side, while two Buckeyes placed in the Top 5 of the women’s final. Bruton raced to a time of 21.47 and Faust a time of 21.51, both season bests. For the women, runner-up honors went to senior Chesna Sykes in a time of 24.04, while junior Aisha Cavin placed fourth in 24.27 seconds.
Other day one highlights:
• Senior Carly Pendleton finished seventh overall in the weight throw with a personal-best throw of 17.78 meters (58-4.00).
• Junior Ivy Horn finished fourth in the heptathlon with a score of 3193.
• Sophomore Nick Schrader cleared a personal-best height of 4.73 meters (15-6.25), capturing sixth place in the pole vault.
• Two Buckeye men placed in the Top 10 of the weight throw: sophomore Dylan Dyke (seventh, 19.19 meters/62-11.50) and sophomore Aaron Zedella (ninth, 18.54 meters/60-10.00).
• Third place in the men’s 600-meter run went to junior Champ Page, who crossed the finish line in a time of 1:19.53. Junior Rebecca Rings placed seventh in the women’s race in 1:32.93.
