COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 12 Ohio State men’s soccer team was edged by Maryland, 2-0, in the championship match of the 2015 Big Ten Men’s Soccer Tournament Sunday afternoon at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes’ nine-match win streak was snapped with the loss vs. the Terrapins and fall to 13-6-2 in 2015. The 2015 Big Ten regular season champion Buckeyes will now await the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Selection Show, which is Monday, November 16 at 1 pm ET on NCAA.com.
“We didn’t have a good first half and we were surprised how physical the game was allowed to be,” head coach John Bluem said. “We didn’t adjust to that. We played better in the second half and dominated them statistically. We hit the crossbar and their goalkeeper made a great save. I’m real proud of our guys for their effort in the second half.”
Maryland jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute when Eryk Willamson scored from 10 yards out off a rebound following a shot that hit the crossbar. Ivan Magalhaes headed the service off the crossbar to set up the scoring chance at 9:06. The goal marked the first time the Buckeyes have trailed at home since Aug. 30 – a span of more than 951 minutes. Ohio State was limited by the UMD defense in the first half, tallying just four shots in the first 45 minutes. Kyle Culbertson had four long throw-ins denied by MD keeper Cody Niedermeier. Ohio State’s best chance in the first half came when Culbertson headed a pass to the far post, but Maryland cleared it out of danger in the 43rd minute.
Ohio State created several great looks in the second half with the wind at its back, but could not find an equalizer. In the 60th minute, Danny Jensen connected on a header in front of net, but Niedermeier made a diving stop at the far post to keep it a 1-0 deficit. Ten minutes later, Zach Mason launched a shot from 20 yards out but it caromed right off the cross bar and cleared away. Ohio State had seven second-half corners but couldn’t convert. On the seventh attempt, somehow a loose ball in front of the goal line could not find a Buckeye and was eventually covered by Niedermeier.
Maryland clinched the title with its second goal in the 88th minute when Tsubasa Endoh scored off a rebound at 87:31.
“This was like an NCAA Tournament game,” Bluem said. “We are going to play against quality teams similar to how Maryland played today. We need to adjust to a higher level of intensity as we move forward.”
Overall, shots were an even 11-11, while Ohio State held a 7-6 lead in corners. Zach Mason and Yaw Amankwa were named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team.
