PORTLAND, Ore. — A pair of Buckeyes dipped into the 60’s on Day Two of the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational (NCi), including a career-low 65 (-7) by Clark Engle which pulled him within three strokes of the tournament leaders. Tee-k Kelly had himself a day as well, firing a 4-under 68 to make his own climb up the individual leaderboard.
Engle rocketed up the leaderboard 27 slots on Monday, going from a share of 28th place into a tie for fifth by day’s end. Kelly also made a big move upward, jumping from 61st into a piece of 35th place overall. After bogeying the third hole of the day, Engle birdied seven of the final 15 to bring himself into contention for medalist honors. The junior is three shots shy of tournament co-leaders Beau Hossler (Texas) and Max Greyserman (Duke). Kelly, meanwhile, didn’t record his only bogey of the round until the 15th hole, acquiring five birdies along the way. He has excelled on the Par 3’s, compiling a 2-under overall total on such holes; the lowest tally of all comers.
As the tournament switched from the Ghost Creek Course over to the Witch Hollow Course for Round Two, so did the Ohio State team performance. The Buckeyes tied for sixth in the second round, posting a 7-under team total of 281. Round number three will be contested on Witch Hollow as well.
Will Grimmer followed his opening-round 72 with a 74 on Monday. His 146 sum is good for 52nd place. He met par for each of the first 15 holes before registering birdie-bogey-double bogey to wrap up the round. Addison Coll finished strong down the stretch, shooting 2-under on his Back 9. For the tournament, Coll ranks T-64th among 75 players. Josh Wick is 11-over and tied for 74th place.
