Buckeyes Open Season with FGCU Invite – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Competition begins for 12 Ohio State women’s swimmers this weekend down in Fort Myers at the FGCU Eagle Swimming Classic. The meet kicks off on Friday at 5:30 ET and will finish up on Saturday morning beginning at 10:30 ET. The 12 swimmers traveling for the meet are:

This weekend’s meet, designed to be a fast-paced competition, features no event longer than 500 yards. Each event will have two heats, an A and a B, with each school placing one swimmer in each heat. Each individual swimmer is only allowed to compete in three events per day, so a bit of strategy was involved in deciding who to send down. Head coach Bill Dorenkott said that, between the competition and the way the meet is structured, it will give him and his staff a great chance to see where the team is at heading into the season.
Also competing this weekend will be fellow 2015 NCAA Qualifier Florida Gulf Coast, Rutgers, Buffalo, South Carolina, and Grand Canyon.

News and Notes
- The Buckeyes are coming off one of the best summers the program has seen in some time, setting new records in 13 of 17 long course events over the past few months. Clary and Vargo, both swimming this weekend, set six combined records over the summer months. Meek was also a member of a record-breaking relay team, and Zeren’s performance in the 200m backstroke at the FINA World Championships not only broke an Ohio State record, but it set a Turkish national record as well.
- Though 11 of the 12 swimmers this weekend have swam for the Scarlet and Gray before, this weekend will mark the debut for Norris, a freshman from Cincinnati. Dorenkott noted that, after having a great summer, the decision to send her down to FGCU was an easy one.
- The invitation to attend the meet was extended via former Buckeye assistant Amanda Smith, currently a coach with FGCU.
