COLUMBUS, Ohio – Liam Doyle scored on a penalty kick in the 98th minute to give the Ohio State men’s soccer team a 1-0 OT win at Indiana Friday night in Bloomington. The Buckeyes improve to 6-4-2 overall and 2-1-1 in Big Ten play, while Indiana falls to 7-4-1 and 1-3 in conference action. With its second straight overtime victory, Ohio State extends its win streak to five-consecutive matches and unbeaten streak to seven.
“It was a fantastic effort by our players against a very good Indiana team,” head coach John Bluem said. “You hate to see a game decided in a fashion like that. It was a well-fought match but it was clearly a penalty. We are going to have to rest up now. Our guys are pretty confident in what we are doing right now. We just need to recover and get ready for another match Wednesday night.”
Doyle, a 2015 team captain, stepped up and struck the penalty kick into the back left of the net for the gamewinner with less than three minutes to go in the first OT period. It’s his fifth converted PK in two seasons as a Buckeye.
“It’s a tremendous win for our program and to keep our run going,” Doyle said. “Indiana was very good tonight and caused us some problems, but we stuck to our game plan and fortunately I got the chance to finish the game in overtime with a penalty kick.”
Senior goalkeeper Chris Froschauer had a strong performance all night vs. the Hoosiers collecting a season-high seven saves. He improves to 6-4-2 in 2015.
In the 14th minute, Danny Jensen had the team’s best first-half chance to find the back of the net, but his shot just went high over the bar. Indiana had a one-on-one opportunity in the 31st minute, but the Hoosier shot caromed off the near post to keep it scoreless. Moments later, Jensen headed a long free kick service by Liam Doyle, but the shot was grabbed by IU keeper Colin Webb. At half, Froschauer registered five saves.
In the second half, Ohio State had some good looks at net. A free kick by Liam Doyle just missed Marcus McCrary in front of the net in the 52nd minute. Yaw Amankwa gathered a loose ball in the Indiana box in the 62nd, but it went wide right. Meanwhile, the OSU defense continued to hold strong guided by Froschauer, who made a diving save in the 61st minute.
Both teams continued to battle in the two overtime periods. Ohio State garnered the first corner chance of the extra time period in the 92nd minute, but could not put a shot on goal. Both teams could not put a shot on during the OT period.
Overall, shots were 18-4 in favor of the Hoosiers, while Indiana held a 6-2 lead in corners.
The Buckeyes return to the field at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Kentucky.
