COLUMBUS, Ohio – Joao Ehlers scored a goal in the 92nd minute of play to lead the Ohio State men’s soccer team to a win over Elon, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at UNCW Soccer Stadium in Wilmington, N.C. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 1-0-3 on the year, while Elon drops to 2-2-0. Ohio State claimed the tournament title with a 1-0-1 mark, while Danny Jensen, Tyler Kidwell, Alex Ivanov and Yianni Sarris were named to the all-tournament team.
A junior transfer from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Ehlers dropped in the golden goal from 18 yards out in extra time of the previously scoreless match. In only his second appearance with the Scarlet and Gray, the goal was Ehlers’ first of his Buckeye career.
A strong match for the Buckeye defense overall, senior goalkeeper Alex Ivanov led the way with four saves. One of his most crucial saves came in the 82nd minute when the Strongsville, Ohio, native knocked a strike from an Elon forward out of play to force extra time.
Despite few chances in the opening 45 minutes of play, Ohio State was still able to apply pressure to the Phoenix defensive unit. One instance in particular was a breakaway charge from Konrad Kucharski in the 26th minute. As one of Ohio State’s two shot-on-goal attempts in the first half, the strike was ultimately downed by the Elon goalkeeper to hold the match scoreless. The Buckeyes had four corner opportunities in the first, compared to none from Elon. At the half, shots were locked 5-5.
Ivanov was challenged early in the second, but held strong to earn his second save of the match in the 46th minute. Ohio State’s defense withstood three corner attempts from Elon within the first 10 minutes of the half.
The match then underwent an hour weather delay due to the presence of lightning in the area.
Ohio State came out of the delay on the offensive attack with two shots from Danny Jensen and another from Austin Bergstrom in just over a minute (72nd). Elon went on the attack with under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, but was unable to convert before time expired.
The Buckeyes will return to the pitch Sunday, Sept. 14 to take on Northwestern at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
