THE GOLDEN BEAR
Born in Columbus, Jack Nicklaus attended The Ohio State University from 1957-61 and received an honorary doctorate from the university in 1972. The tournament this weekend, once again named in Nicklaus’ honor, will mark the fourth time the Ohio State golf program has paid tribute to the golfing legend in such manner.
Nicklaus is one of the greatest golfers to ever play the game, tallying 73 official victories on the PGA Tour and 118 total victories across the globe during his 43-year career (1962-2005). With 18 major-championship titles under his belt, Nicklaus has earned dozens of accolades including “Individual Male Athlete of the Century” by Sports Illustrated and the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. In 2005, the Golden Bear was honored by President George W. Bush with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a civilian.
In addition to his wildly successful career as a master of the links, Nicklaus is also an accomplished golf course architect. His course architecture company, Nicklaus Design, has had a hand in designing nearly 350 courses around the world, including Muirfield Village and the redesign of Ohio State’s Scarlet Course.
Nicklaus has left his mark on the game of golf as a player, architect and philanthropist. He currently lives in Palm Beach, Fla. with his wife, Barbara. They are parents to five and grandparents to 21.
LAST TIME OUT
The Buckeyes carded a 7-over 847 at the 18th Windon Memorial Classic where they capped off an impressive weekend with a 282 on their third and final round, ultimately capturing a second place finish. Grant Weaver and Clark Engle led the team as they both finished tied for fourth with a 1-under finish. The result was the Buckeyes’ best since finishing second at the Northwestern Spring Invitational in April 2013.
THE JACK NICKLAUS INVITATIONAL
The 2014 edition of the tournament will feature a return to Ohio State’s Scarlet Course, which hosted the tournament last year. California captured the team title in 2013 as they carded an 842 throughout the two-day, 54-hole tournament.
The Scarlet Course, located two miles northwest of the main campus, first opened in 1938 and was designed by famed architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie. Under the direction of Buckeye legend Jack Nicklaus it underwent a major renovation in 2005 and reopened in the spring of 2006.
The Scarlet Course has played host to numerous tournaments on the amateur and professional levels, including U.S. Open Qualifying, the Nationwide Tour’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational, AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions, several men’s and women’s Big Ten championships and NCAA regionals.
WEATHER FORECAST
According to Weather Channel, partly cloudy conditions are expected with highs in the low-80s throughout the weekend.
BEARD’S RETURN
Syracuse head coach, Michael Beard, played at the Scarlett Course in 2002 where he competed in the NCAA Championships and tied for eighth.
UP NEXT
The Ohio State men’s Golf Team will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, on October 6 to compete in the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational.
