OXFORD, Ohio – It was déjà vu for Buckeye Women’s Volleyball Saturday morning versus IUPUI, earning a sweep with a tightly-contested second set sandwiched by a pair larger victory margins in the first and third sets (25-18, 29-27, 25-20); just as occurred during Friday night’s sweep of UAB. Two Buckeyes, Luisa Schirmer and Erin Sekinger, each recorded double-doubles in the three-set stint.
Sekinger hammered home a career-high 22 kills, averaging over seven put-aways per set. She swung at a .333 clip (22-7-45) while also digging 11 balls. Schirmer’s double-double came via 12 kills and 14 digs. As a team, Ohio State racked up 70 digs powered by four individuals with 10 or more (Valeria León – 14; Taylor Sherwin – 12). The defensive front court took care of business as well, totaling six blocks led by Elizabeth Campbell’s team-high four rejections.
A kill from Sekinger opened the match and gave OSU a lead for good in the first set. Sekinger wound up with seven kills and three digs in the frame while Schirmer contributed five kills and eight digs as Ohio State rolled, 25-18.
Set number two was neck-and-neck throughout. The lone lead for either team of more than two points came at 8-5 in the early goings. The score was tied on 21 different occasions and the lead swapped sides of the net nine times. Ohio State successfully fended off three match points to allow a 29-27 thrilling winner. Trailing 27-26, Sekinger bounced back-to-back kills, her ninth and 10th of the set, to push the Bucks ahead 28-27. A block from Katie Mitchell and Tyler Richardson followed, clinching a 29-27 victory.
The Jaguars jumped out to an 8-6 edge in the third set before cracking the door with a service error. Ohio State took advantage and burst through by taking 11 of the next 14 points, including a run of six consecutive points. Sophomore Kylie Randall got in on the fun as well, blasting five kills in the final frame.
The Scarlet & Gray play again this evening, facing the host RedHawks of Miami University at 7 p.m. ET.
