COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State Women’s Volleyball carries its four-match winning streak to the Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier University for the Millenium Hotel Invitational this weekend. Play begins Friday, Sept. 12 with Ohio State taking on Syracuse at 4 p.m. ET to open the four-team round-robin event also featuring Ohio and the host Musketeers. The Buckeyes (4-2) face an opposition with a combined season record of 14-4.

KNOCK YOUR BLOCK OFF
Ohio State is averaging 3.04 blocks per set, ranking second-best in the Big Ten trailing only Iowa’s 3.12 clip. The Buckeye blocking total ranks 11th on the national level. Sophomore Taylor Sandbothe is leading the way, responsible for a conference-best 1.83 blocks/set, ranking third in the country.
LOCAL FLAVOR
Three local Columbus area products can be found on the Xavier roster. Senior Alex Blair hails from Dublin Coffman High School while freshmen Lauren Frilling and Alexis Newsome graduated from Bishop Watterson High School and Pickerington Central High School, respectively.
BACK WITH THE BOBCATS
Geoff Carlston will face his former school, Ohio University, for the first time in his career Saturday morning. He came to Ohio State after spending five year as head coach at OU, building a powerhourse in the Mid-American Conference. His Bobcat squads reached the NCAA Tournament every season and won five straight conference crowns with an overall record of 144-22 during Carlston’s time in Athens.
BIG TEN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Taylor Sandbothe was named the Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 8 after averaging 2.00 blocks per set as Ohio State laid claim to the Sports Imports D.C. Koehl Classic trophy. The sophomore middle blocker was a force throughout the entire weekend, recording no less than six blocks and averaging at least 1.5 per set in all three Buckeye victories.
It marks the third B1G weekly recognition for Sandbothe, twice being named the conference’s Freshman of the Week last season (Nov. 11; Nov. 25). She also becomes the first Buckeye to earn Defensive Player of the Week laurels since Mariah Booth on Nov. 7, 2011.
WE MUST PROTECT THIS HOUSE
Ohio State defended its home turf admirably last weekend, laying claim to the 9th Annual Sports Imports D.C. Koehl Classic trophy. The Buckeyes defeated Auburn, Florida Gulf Coast and Southern Illinois to take ownership of the hardware. Luisa Schirmer was voted the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player while Elizabeth Campbell and Taylor Sandbothe joined her on the all-tournament team.
