National Champions! Ohio State Wins Sixth NRA National Championship – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State pistol team won its sixth NRA Intercollegiate National Championship Thursday, notching a perfect 14-0 record on the season after shooting an overall open team score of 6,310 to claim first place over the U.S. Naval Academy, which placed second with a team score of 6,277, and the U.S. Military Academy, which finished third with a team score of 6,239.
The championship marks the second time in program history the Buckeyes have won a national title in open team competition, as they previously claimed an open team title in 2000. Ohio State has also claimed four national championships in women’s team competition, notching titles in 2000, 2003, 2004 and 2009.
In addition to the open team title, senior Joe Totts claimed two individual championships, shooting a 1,613 to win the title in three-gun aggregate competition and tallying a 556 score in standard pistol to be crowned the individual national champion in that event for the second consecutive season.
Senior Kimberly Hullings earned a silver medal in women’s two-gun aggregate competition, earning an overall score of 918 to finish behind junior Alexis Lagan (Utah) who shot a 936.
Ohio State opened the competition with free pistol, scoring a 1,997 to finish the event in second place just behind the U.S. Naval Academy (1,999) but ahead of the U.S. Military Academy (1,977). Seven Buckeyes qualified to shoot in free pistol as individuals, with junior Greyson McCaig finishing in fifth place overall.
The Scarlet and Gray continued the match with standard pistol, taking first place with a score of 2,118. The U.S. Military Academy finished in second place with a score of 2,080 while the U.S. Naval Academy finished in third place with a score of 2,062.
Ohio State ended competition with open air pistol, finishing in third place with a score of 2,195. The U.S. Military Academy claimed first with a score of 2,200 while the U.S. Naval Academy scored a 2,198 to notch second.
The Buckeye women’s team comprised of seniors Hullings and Mariah Skiles as well as freshmen Elizabeth Buerling and Elizabeth Szalajko placed second overall with an aggregate score of 2,649, narrowly falling to first-place MIT, which won the national title with an aggregate score of 2,669.
The Buckeyes finished third in women’s air pistol, notching a score of 1,059 to finish behind MIT (1,080) and North Dakota State University (1,071). Hullings completed the event in fourth place, finishing just outside of medal contention.
The Scarlet and Gray battled back in women’s sport pistol, however, taking first place in a tie breaker over the U.S. Military Academy, both having scored a 1,590 overall. MIT rounded out top three teams with a 1,589 score.
