Ohio State Places Eighth at Big Ten Match Play Championship – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team lost a pair of matches to end play at the Big Ten Match Play Championship in eighth place. Entering the tournament as the fifth-seed, the Buckeyes fell to Indiana and Illinois on the par 72, 7,474-yard course at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
Almost each individual match came down to the wire when the Buckeyes took on the ninth-seeded Hoosiers. Ultimately, Ohio State came up short falling to a score of 3-2-0.
Boo Timko finished his contest 1-up, winning five holes in the process. The Buckeye junior dropped three birdies, including two in a row on holes 16 and 17. Also representing Ohio State with a victory was freshman Clark Engle. Similar to Timko, Engle won five holes to round out the match 1-up. He birdied the 15th hole, while finishing even par on 11 holes overall.
Frederik Hammer and Tee-k Kelly each fell by a hole to their competitors. Hammer, a freshman this season, took four holes but was unable to rally back on the 18th hole. He birdied four holes during the match. Kelly, on the other hand, posted on birdie and 12 even scoring holes.
Freshman Addison Coll, who is competing in his first collegiate tournament, dropped his match by four holes with three remaining.
Moving on to the second team event of the day for the Buckeyes, Ohio State dropped its match 2-2-1 to Illinois.
Timko and Hammer both picked up wins this time around. Timko finished with five holes remaining up by six. He birdied four holes, bringing his 1-stroke under total for the day to seven. Hammer routed his opponent by one hole. Kelly halved his match, with each competitor winning four holes apiece.
The match between Michael Bernard and his competitor was completed in 13 holes. He was down by seven holes when the match was called. Down by two holes, Engle ended on the hole No. 8. In all, the freshman birdied two holes.
Next on the agenda, the Scarlet and Gray will suit up for the USF Invitational in Sarasota, Fla. March 2-4.
