COLUMBUS, Ohio – Elizabeth Campbell, Taylor Sandbothe and Taylor Sherwin were all recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) as All-America Honorable Mention on Wednesday (Dec. 17). It marks the first time in school history in which three Buckeyes earned All-America status in the same season.
Ohio State has now placed at least one player on the AVCA All-America list in four consecutive seasons. During that four-year stretch, six different Buckeyes have received All-America standing under the guidance of head coach Geoff Carlston. In total, Ohio State has gathered eight All-America honors in the Carlston Era:
2009 – Katie Dull, Honorable Mention
2011 – Emily Danks, Honorable Mention; Mari Hole, Honorable Mention
2012 – Mari Hole, Third Team
2013 – Kaitlyn Leary, Honorable Mention
2014 – Elizabeth Campbell, Honorable Mention; Taylor Sandbothe, Honorable Mention; Taylor Sherwin, Honorable Mention
Campbell served as a six-rotation player for the Scarlet & Gray, accumulating 2.77 kills, 1.65 digs and .57 blocks per set. She elevated her game in Big Ten play, ranking in the conference’s top-10 with 3.70 points, 3.18 kills and .24 assists per set. Campbell was named the ESPNW National Player of the Week and B1G Player of the Week after posting a 20-20 match (23 kills, 20 digs) in Ohio State’s road victory at Nebraska on Oct. 4.
Sandbothe posted some of the best blocking totals in OSU history, ranking in the top-12 of the following statistical categories: 140 total blocks (T-4th), 26 solo blocks (T-9th), 114 block assists (T-9th) and 1.16 blocks/set (T-11th). She ranked among the Big Ten best in blocks per set and attacking percentage as well. Sandbothe brought in hardware from start to finish this season, picking up all-tournament honors at each of the first three preconference tournaments and the NCAA Regional in Louisville.
Sherwin averaged 10.96 assists per set in Big Ten action, ranking fourth in the conference. For the season, she racked up 1,375 assists (12th-most all-time at OSU). The senior setter was selected as the Big Ten Setter of the Week twice in 2014 and four times in her career. Her 3,624 career assists are slotted fifth all-time in Buckeye lore.
