Sophomore Aaliyah Barnes enters her second season at Ohio State with great expectations. The Columbus native was a standout in her debut season with the Scarlet and Gray, earning First Team All-America honors in the 4×400-meter relay and Honorable Mention All-America honors in the 400-meter dash. In addition, she earned the opportunity to compete at the USATF junior world championships, where she placed fifth in the 400-meter dash.
“Mookie” took time from preseason practice to reflect on her freshman season and look ahead to year two with the Buckeyes.
On her first season at Ohio State
“My first year went very well, but also not as I expected. I had many good personal records and opportunities, such as junior worlds and I never saw that coming. It was all so exciting.”
On competing at the junior world championships
“It was something to remember, that’s for sure. I met so many great people and I was able to become closer to the coaching staff and they were so supportive. This experience helped me realize this is what I want to do forever. It gives me a momentum boost every day I come into practice. I never want to be average. I always want to be great.”
On summer training
“Summer training was filled with speed training and time trials. At the beginning of the season injuries set me back some. Since I have been back, I keep telling my coaches to push me as hard as they can. There has been a lot of hard and long runs.”
On success in the 400-meter run
“A runner in the 400 meters has to be strong because, for me, half of it is mental and the rest in training. You have to be mentally strong and have great form. There also has to be confidence because the 400 is one of the most difficult races to compete in, from my experience.”
On competing in her hometown and state
“It means everything and more. It feels so great to be here and know I represent The Ohio State University – my favorite place in the world. I am not just running for the school, but I am running for everyone here at home.”
Ohio State opens the 2015 season Friday, Jan. 9 at French Field House as hosts of the Buckeye Classic.
